Canard Confit

Alexandre / surfer / master shaper / architect / father / professor / blogger - is a busy dude. His company Barrel Surfboards has been going strong for 3 years now. Back in October, I had the opportunity to test drive a quad fish hand-shaped by Alex. From what I observed in my travels throughout the Basque Region (Euskal Herria), the fish movement is beginning to take flight and Alex is the go-to at the helm in France and beyond. His designs are progressive and his attitude is first rate. He is not in the business of pushing volume, rather he desires a balance in his life - one that employs his love of design coupled with his passion for surf. The end result, well you can see for yourself:

7'4'' pocket trimmin' "Albatroz" shape - collaberation with Nereuskinesis (Portugal)

5'10'' Twin Fin shaped for Alex by Alex

His glasser is top notch too -

'Jagger

Fresh bait waitin' to snag some Northern Atoll grinds. These fish are so beautiful and you can jag 'em... with a bit of practice. The Maldivians are pretty serious about not catching bait fish with nets, so it can be quite tricky landing one of these suckers - keeping 'em alive is a whole 'nother story.

We had plenty'o fakies on hand, too.

Salvaged

Exotic woods are a touchy subject - aesthetically beautiful, but often endangered or irresponsibly harvested. Here is a fat stack of 100% salvaged Brooklyn exotica. Live and direct - saved from the garbage bin and ready for a second chance to shred.

Above is a selection of Bloodwood, Tigerwood, Teak, Peruvian Walnut, Paduke & African Mahogany. They are ready to be sliced and sanded - I'm thinking my landlady is gonna love my new stash - especially the hum of my bandsaw crankin' on a Sunday morning.

Ok so my bandsaw is pretty quiet, but check out these twin keels. Shown above are (from top to bottom) Bloodwood, Peruvian Walnut & Tigerwood. Now it's time to foil. The Walnut is by far going to be the easiest to sand. No grinder right now, but my orbital sander should cover it. I'll throw a 60-grit on and post up when they're ready for glassin'
